Searching the threshold between the self and the external world

ALONG THE PATH: Moving with the Unfolding Line
In the recent solo exhibition, the historic Barn Gallery at Montsalvat was transformed into a site of physical and spiritual pilgrimage. Through expansive, gestural works on paper, the gallery became an invitation to step beyond the everyday and inhabit the rhythm of the walk.
Transcriptions of a body in motion, the works trace the familiar gums of the Yarra river path in Heidelberg, the endurance of a 300km Camino path through Spain, and a lifelong dialogue with the Mornington Peninsula, captured from a camp-studio on the wild back-beach foreshore. Here, the ‘self’ begins to dissolve between the inner and the external world, and the unfolding line becomes a bridge between the physical ground beneath our feet and the soul of the landscape.
Walking the Camino de Santiago
Walking the challenging road along the Frances path from Leon to Santiago de Compostelo. 300kms, 16 days, carrying everything I own on my back.
Ending with over 100 small watercolour drawings, reflections and insights of the body and mind transformation during the solitude and endurance, along the hot and dusty path.
These small sketches and notes became the guide to the large gestural wet-on-wet watercolour and pastel drawings, moments held in time, contemplations beyond our routine world.
Walking the winding Yarra River, near Heidelberg
My daily walk around the Yarra River, near Heidelberg where I live, is both a meditative experience and a long lasting memory of place and nature. There is a strong feeling of the ancient paths here, of the First Nations Wurundjeri people.
Walking the rugged coastline of the Mornington Peninsula
Translating a lifelong connection to the Mornington Peninsula into a study of the constant changes along the rugged coast. Distilling the experience of the bush and beach, these works seek to capture the energy of the landscape and personal connection through gesture, line and colour.
